Biotin deficiency

Biotin belongs to the B complex vitamins. This group of vitamins breaks down fat and carbohydrates in food and converts them into energy. This energy is the driving force behind many of the body's essential functions. Biotin is sometimes also named B-7, vitamin H, or coenzyme R.

Biotin contributes to good skin health, while it is not needed to produce keratin, a protein that strengthens nails and hair. As a water-soluble vitamin, it cannot be stored in the body for a long time, and the body cannot produce it naturally. However, bacteria found in the gut can produce biotin.

Symptoms of Biotin Deficiency

People with biotin deficiency can experience the following symptoms:

  • red rashes on skin, especially on the face
  • dry skin or eyes
  • brittle hair or hair loss
  • motion sickness
  • sleep problems
  • loss of appetite
  • burning or tingling sensation in the hands and feet
  • muscle pains
  • cracking at the corners of the mouth
  • difficulty walking

Causes of biotin deficiency

Biotin deficiency is not so rare, and some of the possible causes are:

Long term diet

Restrictive diets often limit the intake of all vitamins and minerals from food.

Use of medication

Certain medications, such as antibiotics and anticonvulsants, block the body from absorbing vitamins. In addition, antibiotics destroy the beneficial bacteria in the gut, which naturally produce biotin.

Gastrointestinal disorders

Certain chronic intestinal diseases inhibit the absorption of nutrients from food. These conditions include Crohn's disease and colitis.

Biotinidase deficiency

Biotinidase deficiency is an inherited disorder quite rare. People with this disorder cannot use biotin.

Health benefits of biotin

Like other B vitamins, biotin helps the body use the enzymes and transport nutrients to the body. In addition, it participates in the growth of cells, the production of fatty acids, in the metabolism of carbohydrates and proteins.

Healthy hair

Biotin supports hair health. Research shows that biotin improves the appearance of hair, including shine, volume and scalp coverage in women with thinning hair.

Shiny skin and nails

Research shows that biotin is an ingredient for skin hydration and texture while it can strengthen nails and accelerate their growth.

The vitamins C and B6 included assist he normal formation of collagen for the normal function of the skin and the normal synthesis of cysteine. Take two capsules daily or according to the directions of your health care professional.
